Join Sonic and friends in this excellent karting game
You'll never see Mario Kart on iOS, but Sega have been catching up in the world of karting. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is the closest anyone's got to Nintendo's karting king-pin.
Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing doesn't change much from the karting formula. There are a variety of cartoon drivers with different vehicles, and a series of Grand Prix events, each with four races, and there are three difficulty levels. There are also local and multiplayer races. It may not be innovative, but it's a good system of progression that means by the time you unlock the hardest difficulty, you know the tracks well enough to manage the speed.
Great fun on consoles with controllers but has Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing made the transition to touch controls in tact? The very worst thing for any racing game is sloppy, imprecise controls. The joy of Mario Kart is the level of accuracy you can get, threading yourself through the well designed tracks. Thankfully, controls for Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing are pretty good, with automatic acceleration, tilt steering and buttons for braking, drifting and weapons. You can also use slide controls for steering, which works well.
Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing looks good, with colorful and inventive tracks to race around. Races are tight, and the weapons mean you are always under threat of losing! We did notice that even on the newest iOS devices there was occasional slow down when the screen got busy, which is disappointing.Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is a solid karting game with plenty of content, and the closest thing we'll probably ever see to Mario Kart on iOS.
